The Origins of Hamilton Family Wines
Greg’s fascination with grapes and wine began during his travels through the picturesque French countryside. It was there that he first delved into the intricate chemistry of winemaking. His journey eventually led him from the charming streets of Glasgow, Scotland, to the vibrant wine scene of London, England, where he honed his expertise.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Lindsay’s own odyssey commenced during a college tour in California. A chance encounter over a bottle of red wine set the stage for her destined connection with Greg. Together, they embarked on their winemaking adventure, starting with humble beginnings in their Berkeley, California apartment. Despite initial missteps, their unwavering passion carried them to the heart of Sonoma Valley, where Hamilton Family Wines was born on their one-and-a-half-acre vineyard.

Exploring the Vineyard and Terroir of Hamilton Family Wines
The decision to make Sonoma their winemaking home was a thoughtful one. An invitation to a Sonoma wine event changed their course. In Sonoma, they discovered down-to-earth charm, diverse terroirs, and a region cultivated by dedicated small producers. For Lindsay, Sonoma’s commitment to sustainability in farming was a strong draw.

Their estate vineyard, though modest in size, boasts optimal conditions for grapevines, especially Grenache. Situated near Sonoma Creek, the vineyard benefits from sandy and silt loam soils, offering ideal drainage and nutrient retention. Located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, it basks in the warmth of long, hot, and dry summer days, crucial for achieving full ripeness, especially for their Grenache grapes. Tall trees surrounding the vineyard provide natural frost protection during critical periods like bud-break.
At the core of their winemaking philosophy lies a commitment to letting the grapes express their true essence. “Let the grapes sing their song,” Lindsay emphasizes. Their mantra, “pick for flavor, not for alcohol,” acknowledges the challenge of alcohol balance in a warming climate but prioritizes achieving full phenolic ripeness. Vineyard management is pivotal in addressing these challenges, and they selectively source grapes from like-minded vineyards dedicated to exceptional fruit quality.
Hamilton Family Wines’ Rose of Grenache represents a journey through vintage variations, with the 2022 vintage introducing tropical and citrus fruit notes alongside its Provencal influence. Their Noble Vineyard Pinot Noir embodies the classic terroir style of the Petaluma Gap, showcasing the delicate nuances of cool climate Pinot Noir grapes with a slightly robust tannin structure.
