The proprietors have worked hard to make sure their beautiful location allows guests to fully enjoy themselves while also enjoying a glass of Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, and more.

A Lake County Winery Rich With History

Venturing to this beautiful part of Lake County brings you to a land brimming with history and stories. In the 1800s, many families were given land grants to settle here, and their histories live on at the ranch.

25 years ago Kaj and Else Ahlmann bought the property. They instantly recognized its beauty and knew it could be a destination for nature and wine lovers. Their family has been farming the land ever since, using time and its lessons to run the winemaking processes.

Kaj and Else have spent time digging into the history of their land because, as they say, “Knowing what was here before gives us a sense of place.” The history lives on today with the tasting room that was built on the site that used to be a stagecoach stop on the route going out to the Knoxville Mercury mines, 16 miles out.

The Six Sigma Philosophy For Business, Wine and Beyond

Before starting his winery, Kaj worked for GE Capital Services where he helped introduce the Six Sigma principles. Kaj has a master’s degree in mathematical statistics, the basis for the Six Sigma principles. Once he became a vintner, it only made sense to adapt, the Six Sigma standards to his winery’s operations.

The goal of the Six Sigma philosophy is to design a process for every aspect of a project and create a target for each one. As you progress, you measure and course-correct until you’re as close as possible to your target.

Since day one at Six Sigma Ranch, Kaj has tracked, measured, and improved each part of the winemaking to craft the best wine possible. He measures everything from soil quality, vine growing, wine production, aging, and much more.

After 20 years of tracking, the Ahlmanns have nearly perfected winemaking on their land. They’ve now reached a point where Kaj and his team can instantly recognize if the vines need more water or if a wine needs more aging. This allows them to let nature take its course and produce the best wine possible.

A Deep Focus on the Land

Natural Farming

In everything they do, the Ahlmann family strives to have the healthiest land possible because they know it produces great wine.

Kaj grew up with a background in natural farming in his homeland of Denmark. Here, he saw his grandfather tend to the land with care. Today, he strives to emulate these same practices in his own farming. Winemaker Kathryn Finn brings a technical balance to their winemaking, while Kaj’s son Christian utilizes his viticultural degree tending to the vines.

Their natural farming uses processes that take care of the soil to ensure it thrives for years to come. To do this, they grow cover crops, use compost, and nurture plant life and micronutrients to encourage a healthy environment.

Winemaking Based in Passion and Logic

Kaj always had a passion for Tempranillo and wanted to grow it here. But, in true Six Sigma fashion, before moving forward he needed data to make a logic-based decision. So when he first acquired the property, he performed a detailed soil analysis and microclimate monitoring to understand what grapes would grow best in the location.

As luck would have it, the soil composition and Mediterranean climate were ideal for growing Tempranillo. With the data in hand, Kaj enthusiastically planted his ranch with Tempranillo. He also planted other well-suited varieties, including Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Six Sigma benefits from hot days, cool nights, and dry summers — perfect growing conditions for these grapes. Now, after 20 years of farming in this area, the Ahlmanns know instinctively how to produce great wine from their land.

What You Need to Know About Enjoying Six Sigma Ranch

Six Sigma Ranch is known for its restrained European winemaking style. Guests enjoy the lower alcohol levels and balanced fruit notes.

How to Pick a Beautiful Experience at Six Sigma Ranch

When Kaj and Else first bought the land, they knew its natural beauty needed to be shared with visitors. They started with wine but gradually developed many ways that you can enjoy yourself with family and friends. Six Sigma Ranch also embraces families with open arms, welcoming kids and dogs while you enjoy a flight or picnic.

It starts in the historic Stage Coach Tasting Room. There’s a good chance you’ll find one of the owners eager to share the history of the ranch. Reserve one of their wine tastings, grab a glass and they’ll take it from there. Nature lovers can enjoy the outdoor patio while sipping on a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc or a hearty Tempranillo.

Six Sigma Ranch also offers a network of beautiful mountain biking trails that are free for wine club members and $10.00 for the general public. They even host NICA and NorCal-sponsored mountain biking competitions on the property every year.

More recently, the winery has started offering a way for families to stay for a weekend getaway while enjoying the sprawling beauty of the ranch. A brand new glamping resort called Huttopia opened up on the property, in partnership with a French glamping company. The experience boasts 100 newly-built camping units that offer the rustic beauty of the outdoors with the comforts of home, including bed linens, kitchenware, barbecues, and private restrooms.

What Kind of Wine and Food Can I Enjoy at Six Sigma Ranch?

Six Sigma Ranch Winery - Feast

Thanks to Kaj’s meticulous work finding ideal grapes for the property, the wines from Six Sigma Ranch are consistently high-quality and delicious. The winery is now an officially approved Blue Zone partner, embracing the principles that reflect how the world’s longest-lived people ate for most of their lives.

These 11 simple guidelines from the Blue Zones emphasize a predominantly plant-based diet, highlighting the consumption of leafy greens, seasonal fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. By adopting these healthy eating principles, you too can Live Better, Longer.

When you taste these Lake County wines, expect a restrained European style with balance and flavor concentration. The winemaking process maintains lower alcohol levels to allow the beautiful fruit notes to shine through, instead of overpowering them.

Regarding grape varieties, you’ll find high-quality Tempranillo, a personal favorite of Kaj. They also specialize in crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, perfect for a hot summer day. Syrah is another grape that thrives here, thanks to a climate similar to that in the Rhone Valley of France.

I came about your website [six sigma ranch] by chance and am intrigued by your 6-sigma approach. I started my hobby winery [www.chateauhetsakais.com ] 25years ago, and being a Swiss engineer by background, approached the task by collecting, tracking, and analyzing data – from the vineyard through harvest, fermentation, elevage and bottle aging. All is described in detail on my website. I am interested what data model you use and what your experience is in tracking all the data.
